Chapter 3: Lily’s Entrance

The moment Lily walked through those doors, the entire atmosphere in the courtroom changed.
Elena couldn’t take her eyes off the little girl.
She had light brown hair, the same shade as David’s. Her eyes were the exact same deep blue. Even the way she walked — with that slight stubborn tilt of her chin — reminded Elena of David when he was younger.
There was no doubt.
This child was David’s daughter.
David looked like he wanted to run.
Jessica looked like she wanted to disappear.
Judge Whitman waited until Lily was settled with a child advocate in a side room before she continued.
“Mr. Caldwell,” she said, her voice dangerously calm, “would you like to explain why a six-year-old child claims you are her father, and why she says both you and Ms. Price have been mistreating her?”
David’s lawyer tried to intervene.
“Your Honor, we need time to—”
“I’m not asking you,” the judge snapped. “I’m asking your client.”
David swallowed hard.
“She… she’s not supposed to be here,” he said weakly. “Her mother and I had an agreement. She wasn’t supposed to contact me.”
Elena felt like someone had poured ice water down her back.
Her mother?
David had another child with someone else?
And he had kept it a secret the entire time they were married?
Judge Whitman raised an eyebrow.
“So you admit she is your daughter?”
David hesitated, then nodded once.
“Yes.”
A wave of shocked murmurs swept through the courtroom.
Elena felt dizzy.
All those years… all those nights she had cried herself to sleep wondering why David had changed… and he had been hiding a whole other child.
Jessica suddenly stood up.
“This is ridiculous!” she snapped. “That child is lying! She’s always making up stories. She’s difficult and manipulative—”
“Sit down, Ms. Price,” the judge said coldly. “Or I will have you removed.”
Jessica sat down, but her face was twisted with anger.
Judge Whitman turned back to David.
“Mr. Caldwell, this court takes allegations of child mistreatment very seriously. Especially when they come from the child herself. I am ordering an immediate investigation by Child Protective Services. Until further notice, you will have no contact with Lily Caldwell.”
David’s face turned even paler.
“But she’s my daughter—”
“You should have thought about that before allowing her to be mistreated in your home,” the judge replied sharply.
She then looked at Elena.
“Mrs. Caldwell, given this new information, I am going to postpone any ruling on your divorce settlement until we have more clarity on these serious allegations. I suggest you speak with your attorney about possibly amending your requests.”
Elena nodded slowly, still in shock.
She hadn’t come here today expecting any of this.
But as she looked at David’s terrified face, she realized something.
