Chapter 11: The Custody Twist

Two days after the dramatic courtroom hearing, Child Protective Services completed their initial investigation into Lily’s living situation.
The findings were damning.
Multiple witnesses, including neighbors and former household staff, confirmed that Jessica Price had physically struck Lily on several occasions. There were also reports of Lily being locked in her room for hours as punishment. David Caldwell was found to have been aware of the mistreatment but had failed to intervene in any meaningful way.
The court moved quickly.
At a follow-up hearing, Judge Whitman ruled that Lily Caldwell would remain in temporary foster care while the full investigation continued. David was granted very limited, supervised visitation rights — only two hours per week, and only if he complied with parenting classes and counseling.
David’s lawyer tried to fight the ruling.
“Your Honor, removing a child from her father’s care is an extreme measure. Mr. Caldwell is a respected member of the community—”
Judge Whitman cut him off.
“Mr. Caldwell allowed his six-year-old daughter to be physically and emotionally abused under his own roof. That is not the behavior of a responsible parent. The court’s priority is Lily’s safety, not Mr. Caldwell’s reputation.”
David sat in silence, his face pale and drawn.
Across the aisle, Elena watched quietly.
She hadn’t asked to be involved in Lily’s case, but after hearing the little girl’s testimony, she couldn’t stay silent. Her attorney had already filed paperwork requesting that Elena be considered as a temporary placement for Lily.
Judge Whitman looked over at Elena.
“Mrs. Caldwell, your request to be considered as a placement option for Lily is noted. Given your stable situation and clean record, CPS will conduct a home study. We will revisit this matter in thirty days.”
Elena nodded, her hand resting on her pregnant belly.
She didn’t know if she was ready to take in another child while preparing to give birth. But she knew one thing for certain:
Lily deserved better than what she had been given.
And if Elena could help, even a little, she would.
David looked at her from across the courtroom. For the first time, there was no anger in his eyes — only exhaustion and something that looked like regret.
Elena didn’t look away.
She simply placed both hands on her belly and turned her attention back to the judge.

And it wasn’t over yet.
