Chapter 9: Elena’s Strength

Elena sat in her attorney’s office the next day, feeling more clear-headed than she had in months.

Her lawyer, Mr. Thompson, spread several documents across the table.

“Given everything that came out in court yesterday, we have a very strong position,” he said. “Not only can we fight for a much larger settlement, but we can also request full custody of your child and possibly involvement in Lily’s case.”

Elena placed both hands on her belly.

“I don’t want to use Lily as a weapon,” she said quietly. “But I also don’t want her going back to that house. She deserves better.”

Mr. Thompson nodded.

“We can request that you be considered as a temporary guardian or at least have visitation rights while the investigation is ongoing. Given your clean record and stable situation, the court might look favorably on that.”

Elena thought about Lily’s small face and the way she had held that rabbit.

She made her decision.

“I want to fight,” she said. “Not just for myself. But for Lily too. She has no one else.”

Her attorney smiled.

“Then let’s amend the petition. We’re going to ask for the house, a significant portion of the savings, and primary custody of your child. We’ll also file to be considered for Lily’s placement.”

Elena nodded.

For the first time since she found out she was pregnant, she didn’t feel like a victim anymore.

She felt strong.

She felt like a mother who was ready to protect not only her own child, but another child who needed someone in her corner.

David had taken so much from her.

But he wasn’t going to take her strength.

Not anymore.
