Chapter 13: The Aftermath
In the weeks that followed, David’s life continued to unravel.
The investigation into Lily’s mistreatment led to formal charges against both David and Jessica for child endangerment and neglect. Jessica was arrested first. David was released on bail but was ordered to stay away from Lily and Elena.
His business partners began distancing themselves. Several major clients pulled their contracts after the story made local news. The once-respected David Caldwell was now seen as a man who had abandoned his pregnant wife and mistreated his own child.
Elena tried not to take satisfaction in his downfall.
But she couldn’t deny that a small part of her felt justice had finally been served.
Meanwhile, CPS completed their home study on Elena’s house. The report came back positive. Elena was approved as a temporary placement option for Lily.
When the news was delivered, Elena cried.
She hadn’t realized how much she wanted to help Lily until that moment.
Lily was brought to Elena’s house for her first overnight visit two weeks later. She arrived carrying her worn stuffed rabbit and a small backpack.
Elena opened the door and smiled warmly.
“Hi, Lily. I’m really glad you’re here.”
Lily looked up at her shyly, clutching her rabbit.
“Me too,” she whispered.
That first night, Elena made Lily’s favorite food — chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese — and let her pick a movie. They sat together on the couch, and for the first time, Lily seemed to relax.
Before bed, Lily looked up at Elena with serious eyes.
“Do you think my daddy is a bad person?” she asked quietly.
Elena knelt down so she was at Lily’s eye level.
“I think your daddy made some very bad choices,” she said gently. “But that doesn’t mean you’re bad. And it doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to be loved and safe.”
Lily nodded slowly, then hugged her rabbit tighter.
“Can I stay here for a while?” she asked.

“Yes, sweetheart. You can stay as long as you need to.”
