Chapter 10: The Settlement
Three days later, David’s lawyer contacted Elena’s attorney with an offer.
They wanted to settle.
David was willing to give Elena the house, 70% of their joint savings, and full custody of their unborn child. In exchange, he wanted to avoid a long, public trial and any criminal charges related to Lily.
Elena sat with her attorney and thought about it.
She could take the money and the house and walk away.
Or she could push for more — especially when it came to Lily.
After a long discussion, Elena made her decision.
“I’ll accept the financial terms,” she told her lawyer. “But I want it in writing that I will be considered as a placement option for Lily during the investigation. And I want David to have limited, supervised visitation with our child once he or she is born — if he even wants it.”
Her attorney raised an eyebrow.
“You’re being very generous with the money. Are you sure?”
Elena nodded.
“I don’t need to destroy him financially. I just need to make sure my children — both of them — are safe. And I want him to understand that he doesn’t get to walk away from his responsibilities anymore.”
Two days later, the settlement was signed.
David Caldwell lost the house, most of his savings, and any claim to their unborn child.
He also lost any chance of quietly disappearing from the mess he had created.
Elena walked out of the courthouse that day feeling lighter than she had in months.
She still had a long road ahead — giving birth, raising her child, and possibly helping Lily through a difficult time.
But she was no longer alone.
