Chapter 2: The Interruption
Judge Whitman let the silence stretch for several long seconds before she spoke again.
“Lily,” she said gently, “can you tell me why you were crying earlier?”
Lily looked down at her rabbit, then back up at the judge.
“I was scared,” she whispered.
“Why were you scared?”
Lily glanced at David, then quickly looked away.
“Because Daddy and the mean lady said if I told anyone what happened, they would send me away. They said no one would believe me anyway.”
Jessica made a small, choked sound.
David’s lawyer stood up quickly.
“Your Honor, this is highly irregular. We weren’t given any notice about this child. We object to—”
“Sit down,” Judge Whitman said sharply. “This court will hear what this child has to say.”
She turned back to Lily.
“Sweetheart, who is the mean lady?”
Lily pointed at Jessica without hesitation.
“That lady. She lives with my daddy now. She gets mad when I cry. Sometimes she locks me in my room. And she told me that my real mommy doesn’t want me anymore.”
Elena felt like someone had punched her in the stomach.
Real mommy?
David had told this little girl that her mother didn’t want her?
Judge Whitman’s expression darkened.
“Lily, when you say she locks you in your room… what do you mean?”
Lily hugged her rabbit tighter.
“When I ask about my mommy or when I cry too much, she gets angry. She says I’m annoying. Then she puts me in my room and locks the door. Sometimes she doesn’t let me out for a long time. I get scared when it’s dark.”
The courtroom was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
David looked like he was about to be sick.
Jessica’s face had gone completely red. She opened her mouth, but no words came out.
Judge Whitman turned to David, her voice ice cold.
“Mr. Caldwell, do you have anything to say?”
David’s mouth opened and closed several times.
“She’s… she’s lying,” he finally managed to say. “She’s just a child. She doesn’t understand—”
“She seems to understand quite clearly,” the judge cut him off.
She looked back at Lily.
“Lily, is there anything else you want to tell us?”
Lily nodded slowly.
“Daddy and the mean lady said they were going to make sure Elena’s baby goes away. They said it was better that way. They said Elena is bad and doesn’t deserve to have a baby.”
Elena’s hand flew to her mouth.
David had been talking about getting rid of her baby?
She felt like she was going to throw up.
David shot to his feet.
“That’s a lie!” he shouted. “She’s making it up! She’s just repeating things she heard somewhere—”
“Enough!” Judge Whitman’s voice cracked like a whip. “One more outburst and you will be held in contempt.”
David sat back down, breathing hard.
The judge looked at Lily with gentle eyes.
“Thank you for being so brave, Lily. You did the right thing by telling the truth.”
Then she turned to the bailiff.
“Please take Lily to a quiet room with a child advocate. I want her to be comfortable while we continue.”
As Lily was led out of the courtroom, she looked back one last time at David.
She didn’t say anything.
She just hugged her rabbit tighter.
But the look in her eyes said everything.
