Chapter 13: The New Tradition

On Christmas morning, I woke up to a message from my daughter.
Mom, we’re sorry. The kids miss you, but we understand. We’re trying to make Christmas without you. It’s harder than we thought. We love you.
I smiled and replied.
I love you too. Enjoy the day. We will make new traditions next year — together.
The new tradition began with me.
I had breakfast on the balcony.
I walked on the beach.
I read my book.
I bought myself a small gift — a pretty scarf I had wanted for years.
I called my old friend from college and laughed for an hour.
The new tradition was simple.
It was kindness to myself.

It was time that belonged to me.
