Chapter 9: The Phone Calls

The phone calls started on Christmas Eve.

Rachel called first.

“Mom, this is not funny. The kids are crying. We don’t know what to do.”

I listened quietly.

Then I said, “I left a note. I need this time for myself.”

She was silent for a moment.

Then she said, “You always do this for us. Why not this year?”

“Because I’m tired,” I said. “And I deserve a Christmas that belongs to me.”

Michael called next.

“Mom, we’re sorry. Just come home. We’ll help this time.”

I smiled.

“You said that last year. And the year before.”

Lauren called.

“The kids miss you. Please.”

I told them all the same thing.

“I love you. But I need this.”

The phone calls continued.

I did not answer all of them.

I sat on the beach and let the waves answer instead.
