Chapter 7: The Past

That night in the hotel, I let myself remember the past.

I remembered the first Christmas after my husband died.

I remembered cooking for twenty people while grieving.

I remembered the years I spent being the dependable one.

The one who never said no.

The one who paid for the groceries, wrapped the gifts, made the beds, and smiled while everyone else took photos and called it “family time.”

I remembered the Christmas when I had the flu and still cooked for everyone because no one offered to help.

I remembered the Christmas when my daughter told me, “You’re so good at this, Mom. We couldn’t do it without you.”

I remembered believing her.

I remembered the years I gave without being asked if I wanted to.

I remembered the quiet nights after everyone left, washing dishes alone while the house felt too big and too empty.

I remembered all of it.

And for the first time, I did not feel guilty for choosing myself.

The past was heavy.

But it was no longer my only story.
