Chapter 6: The Family Panic

The family panic started around 2 p.m. on December 23.

My daughter Rachel was the first to arrive with her husband and four children. She walked into the quiet house, saw the note on the dining table, and read it aloud.

The silence that followed was complete.

Then the calls began.

Rachel called me first. No answer.

My son Michael called next. No answer.

Lauren, my daughter-in-law, tried three times in a row.

Still no answer.

The group chat exploded.

Rachel: Mom, this isn’t funny. Where are you?

Michael: The kids are asking for you. The turkey is still in the fridge.

Lauren: We have eight children here and no plan.

Rachel: Mom, please call back. This is not okay.

I sat on the hotel balcony with my phone on silent, watching the ocean.

I did not reply.

The panic grew.

Rachel called her father’s old friends. Michael drove around the neighborhood looking for my car. Lauren tried to organize the children, but they were already asking why Grandma wasn’t there.

The empty house stared back at them.

The tree was lit.

The presents were wrapped.

The table was set for no one.

For the first time, they realized I had a choice.

And I had chosen myself.
