Chapter 12: The Fall of Brenda

Brenda lasted less than forty-eight hours before the mask fully cracked.

At first she tried denial. She claimed Vivian had offered the dress. She claimed the ring had been lent. She claimed the accusation of drugging was a hysterical attack from a jealous wife. But every version of her story collapsed under the simplest questions.

Why would Vivian lend her wedding ring?
Why was Vivian unconscious in her own bed?
Why had Brenda told the entire gala that she was too ill to attend?

Then the housekeeper’s statement circulated among the legal teams. Then the lab confirmation. Then the internal review at Grand Horizon began flagging Brenda’s recent access patterns, duplicated contacts, and quiet overreach into matters far beyond an executive assistant’s role.

The people who had smiled at her the night before stopped answering her messages.

Christopher stopped defending her in public.

By the time Brenda was formally barred from the company building, she was no longer the rising woman in a champagne gown. She was a liability in borrowed clothing.

She showed up at the Albright house once, frantic and poorly composed, demanding to speak to Vivian.

Mrs. Higgins did not let her past the gate.

Vivian did not come downstairs.

There was nothing left to explain to a woman who had already revealed exactly what she was willing to do for a place that never belonged to her.

Brenda’s fall was not poetic.

It was procedural, social, and absolute.
