Chapter 6: The Evidence

Vivian did not go to the gala immediately.

She sat in the study of her home with her laptop open, the black queen chess piece resting beside the keyboard, and began collecting everything she would need. Years of quiet observation had given her more than most people realized. She had kept records of unusual transfers, of Brenda’s expanding access inside Grand Horizon, and of the subtle ways Christopher had begun excluding her from decisions that once required both of them.

Mrs. Higgins stood near the door, still shaken.

“There was a cup on the bedside table when I found you,” she said. “I didn’t throw it away. I thought something felt wrong.”

Vivian looked up.

“Where is it?”

“In the kitchen. I covered it and left it exactly as it was.”

That single decision would matter.

Vivian called her lawyer again, this time with clearer instructions. She requested an emergency consultation, a private investigator, and a secure channel for preserving digital and physical evidence. She also asked for a discreet medical contact who could test the remains of the broth without drawing public attention before she was ready.

While she worked, a message from Luke arrived.

Harrington knows. Two others are asking questions. Father is starting to notice the temperature change.

Vivian stared at the screen for a moment, then typed back:

Do not confront them yet. Let the room turn first.

She set the phone down and opened a locked folder on her computer. Inside were screenshots, email copies, and timeline notes she had gathered over the past year. None of it had been assembled for revenge. At the time, she had told herself it was only caution.

Now it was leverage.

By the time she closed the laptop, the outline of her position was clear.

Brenda had drugged her.
Brenda had stolen from her.
Christopher had allowed it, protected it, and publicly replaced her.

And their son was already moving the pieces.

Vivian picked up the black queen and slipped it back into her pocket.

Evidence first.

Then the strike.
