Chapter 13: Christopher’s Price

Christopher tried, for a short time, to separate himself from Brenda’s disaster.

He told the board he had been misled. He told his lawyer he had not known about the sedative. He told anyone who would still listen that he had only been trying to avoid embarrassment at a public event.

But too many people had watched him stand silent while Brenda was introduced as his wife.

Silence had become part of the evidence.

Inside Grand Horizon, confidence in his judgment weakened quickly. A man who could not protect the boundaries of his own household did not look like a man fit to control a company built on reputation and inherited trust. Vivian’s legal team pressed that point with precision. So did Luke, through the family trust and the shareholder position that Christopher had always underestimated.

The price came in layers.

First came the loss of narrative control.
Then the suspension of certain executive authorities.
Then the formal separation of assets Vivian had every intention of keeping out of his reach.

Christopher came to the house once, demanding to speak to her alone.

Vivian received him in the study.

She did not offer him a seat.

“You let her wear my ring,” she said. “You let her take my place. You let our son watch all of it.”

Christopher’s voice was rough.

“I made a mistake.”

“No,” Vivian replied. “You made a series of choices. And now you will live with the cost of them.”

There was no shouting.

There was no collapse to the floor.

There was only the cold reality that the marriage, the public image, and the power structure he had taken for granted were all being dismantled by the woman he had assumed would remain quiet forever.

When he left that day, he looked smaller than he had at the gala.

That, more than anger, was the beginning of his true payment.
