Chapter 4: Luke’s First Move

Luke did not approach his father immediately.
He moved through the gala with quiet precision, greeting a few familiar faces, accepting polite compliments about how grown-up he looked, and all the while tracking the flow of conversation around Christopher and Brenda.
He had spent weeks preparing for a moment like this.
Not because he wanted revenge for its own sake, but because he had watched his mother slowly disappear inside her own marriage. He had seen the way Brenda mirrored her, replaced her, and finally stepped into her place. He had seen his father’s silence.
Silence, Luke had decided, was also a choice.
Near the silent-auction tables, he stopped beside Mr. Harrington, one of Grand Horizon’s long-standing board members and a man who had respected Vivian for years.
“Mr. Harrington,” Luke said politely. “Could I borrow a moment of your time?”
The older man turned, surprised but not unfriendly.
“Of course, Luke.”
Luke’s voice remained low and respectful.
“I thought you should know that my mother was drugged in her own home this evening. The gown and jewelry Brenda is wearing were taken from her dressing room. So was her wedding ring.”
Harrington’s expression changed at once.
“That is a very serious accusation.”
“It is,” Luke agreed. “And it is also true. My mother is awake now. She has already contacted her lawyer. I thought it best that at least one person in this room hear the truth before the night continues.”
He did not wait for a dramatic reaction. He simply nodded once and walked away, leaving Harrington staring across the ballroom at Brenda in the champagne gown.
Luke made two more quiet conversations of a similar nature.
He did not create a scene.

He planted facts.
And facts, in a room full of powerful people, had a way of moving on their own.
