Chapter 2: The Black Suit

Vivian walked into her closet and pulled out the one thing Brenda had not taken.

A sharp black suit.

She put it on with steady hands. The fabric settled against her skin like armor. She pinned her hair back, washed the bitterness from her mouth, and looked at herself in the mirror.

The woman staring back at her no longer looked drugged or defeated.

She looked ready.

Mrs. Higgins hovered near the door, still pale.

“Ma’am… what are you going to do?”

Vivian picked up her phone.

“First, I’m calling my lawyer.”

The call was short and precise. She did not raise her voice. She did not explain more than necessary. She simply gave instructions and ended the conversation with a calm “I’ll be in touch.”

Then she opened her laptop and began reviewing the accounts she still controlled. Years of staying quiet had not meant years of staying blind. She had kept records. She had noticed transfers. She had watched Brenda’s influence grow inside the company and inside her marriage.

Luke’s note still lay on the desk beside the black queen.

Vivian picked up the chess piece and closed her fingers around it.

Her son had already moved.

That meant the night was no longer only about what Christopher and Brenda had stolen.

It was about what they were about to lose.

Vivian slipped the queen into the pocket of her suit jacket, took one last look at the empty dressing room, and walked out of the bedroom.

Mrs. Higgins followed her to the top of the stairs.

“Should I call the driver?”

“No,” Vivian said. “Not yet.”

She paused on the landing and looked down at the quiet house that had slowly stopped feeling like hers.

“Tonight,” she said softly, “they made the mistake of thinking I would stay in bed.”

Then she continued down the stairs.
