Chapter 15: The Black Suit

Months later, Vivian attended a formal industry dinner in the same black suit.

She did not need a champagne gown to enter a room. She did not need borrowed attention, mirrored gestures, or another woman’s silence to hold her place. When people looked at her now, they no longer looked with pity or speculation. They looked with caution, recognition, and a revised understanding of who she was.

Christopher was no longer beside her.
Brenda was no longer anywhere near her life.
The company matters had been restructured. The legal cases had run their course. The marriage had ended in documents as cold and final as the night that destroyed it.

Before leaving the house that evening, Vivian had paused once more at her desk.

The black queen still stood there.

She picked it up, studied it for a moment, and set it back down.

Luke’s drawing had been simple: a queen knocking a king from the board. At the time, it had felt like a promise. Now it felt like a record of what had already been done.

In the car, Luke glanced over at her.

“You ready?”

Vivian looked out at the city lights moving past the window.

“Yes.”

There was no need for a larger speech. No need to revisit every betrayal, every silence, every calculated cruelty that had led them here. The truth had already been exposed. The price had already been paid.

Vivian rested one hand against the clean line of her black jacket and felt the quiet strength of a woman who had stopped waiting to be chosen, protected, or believed.

She had stood up.

She had put on the black suit.

And from that moment on, no one in her life had been allowed to mistake her for a woman who would simply stay in bed while her world was stolen.
