Chapter 7: The Public Shift

Inside the ballroom, the change was subtle at first.

It began with hesitation. A conversation that stopped when Brenda approached. A smile that no longer reached the eyes. A board member who suddenly found a reason to step away just as Christopher began speaking.

Brenda felt it before Christopher did.

She had spent enough years watching wealthy rooms to recognize the difference between admiration and assessment. Earlier in the evening, people had looked at her with interest, even envy. Now they looked at her as if measuring the risk of standing too close.

“Something’s wrong,” she murmured.

Christopher followed her gaze across the room.

“You’re overthinking it.”

But he was no longer certain.

Mr. Harrington had not returned to their circle. Two senior partners who normally sought Christopher out were deep in conversation near the far windows. A woman who had once praised Brenda’s “refreshing presence” now offered only a cool nod before turning back to her husband.

Luke remained at a distance, polite and composed, speaking only when spoken to. He gave his father nothing obvious to seize on. That restraint made him more dangerous.

Christopher set down his glass.

“Stay here,” he told Brenda.

He crossed the room toward Harrington.

“Is there a problem?” Christopher asked, keeping his voice low.

Harrington studied him for a long moment.

“That depends,” he said. “Is there a reason your wife’s gown and wedding ring are currently on another woman while Vivian herself is absent?”

Christopher’s expression tightened.

“Vivian was unwell.”

“And she offered Brenda her wedding ring as well?” Harrington asked mildly. “Along with her grandmother’s bracelet?”

The questions were soft. The implication was not.

Christopher forced a controlled smile.

“This is a private family matter.”

Harrington’s eyes hardened slightly.

“In rooms like this, private family matters have a way of becoming public liabilities.”

He walked away without waiting for a response.

By the time Christopher returned to Brenda, more phones were out. More glances were being exchanged. The perfect surface of the evening had begun to fracture, not with a scandalous outburst, but with something far more damaging in their world:

Doubt.
