Chapter 13: The Healing

The healing began the day my mother was sentenced.

I moved Grandma Evelyn in with me the same week.

She needed care, and I needed to know she was safe.

We spent the days talking about the past, the years she had spent trying to protect me from my parents’ greed.

She told me stories about my childhood, about the times she had tried to warn me about their behavior.

I listened and apologized for not seeing it sooner.

The healing was slow.

It was quiet.

It was real.

Grandma started smiling again.

She played with Leo, my son, and laughed when he tried to crawl after her.

I started therapy twice a week.

I learned to sleep without checking the locks every hour.

I learned to eat without waiting for permission.

I learned to speak without fear of being hit.

One afternoon, I sat in the garden with Leo in my arms and watched the sun set.

I realized I was no longer waiting for the next blow.

I was living.

The healing was not loud.

It was quiet mornings with my son.

It was nights without nightmares.

It was the slow realization that I was no longer the daughter of a monster.

I was a mother.

And I was enough.
