Chapter 6: The Investigation

The investigation began the moment the police arrived at my parents’ house.

Detective Luis Ramirez took charge. He was calm, professional, and thorough. He listened to Grandma Evelyn’s statement in the living room while I waited in the kitchen with my parents. My mother, Helen, paced back and forth, arms crossed. My father, Richard, sat at the table, staring at his hands.

“This is ridiculous,” Helen muttered. “Your grandmother is confused. She’s old. She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”

I looked at her.

“She knew enough to send the code.”

Richard finally spoke.

“Maya, you’ve always been dramatic. This is a family matter. You didn’t need to bring the police.”

I kept my voice steady.

“Grandma felt unsafe. That makes it my matter.”

The officers finished with Grandma and asked my parents to come to the station for questioning. Helen protested loudly. Richard looked stunned.

As they were led out, Grandma hugged me tightly.

“Thank you for coming,” she whispered.

I held her close.

“I will always come.”

The investigation moved quickly. Officers searched the house. They found bank statements showing unauthorized transfers from Grandma’s accounts to accounts in Helen’s name. They found forged signatures on withdrawal forms. They found a notebook with Grandma’s account numbers and passwords written in my mother’s handwriting.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Detective Ramirez told me later that night, “This is a clear case of financial exploitation of an elderly person. We’re charging both of your parents.”

I sat with Grandma in the hospital waiting room while they processed the paperwork.

She looked at me with tired eyes.

“I didn’t want to believe it,” she said. “They’re my children.”

I held her hand.

“They stopped being your children the moment they chose money over you.”

Grandma nodded slowly.

The investigation had saved her.

And it had finally forced the truth into the light.
