Chapter 9: The Arrest

The arrest was quiet but final.
My parents were charged with elder abuse, financial exploitation, and forgery.
They were taken into custody the next morning.
I stood outside the police station with Grandma Evelyn, watching them being led away in handcuffs.
Helen looked at me with anger and shame in her eyes.
Richard looked at the ground, unable to meet my gaze.
Grandma held my hand tightly, her fingers cold.
“I never wanted this,” she whispered.
“I know,” I said. “But they made their choice.”
The officers placed them in the patrol car.
Helen tried to say something through the window, but the car drove away before she could finish.
The arrest was not satisfying.
It was necessary.
And it was done.
The truth had finally come out.
The family that had hidden behind lies and entitlement was now facing the consequences of their actions.
Grandma and I walked back to the car in silence.
She looked smaller, older, but there was a quiet strength in her eyes.
“Thank you for believing me,” she said.
I squeezed her hand.
May you like
“I will always believe you.”
The arrest marked the end of one chapter.
