Chapter 4: The First Truth

The first truth came the next morning at the police station.

I sat with Grandma Evelyn in the waiting room while the detective explained what they had found.

“Your parents have been taking money from your grandmother’s accounts for months,” Detective Ramirez said. “Forged signatures. Unauthorized transfers. They moved over two hundred thousand dollars to accounts in their names.”

Grandma looked down at her hands.

“I trusted them,” she whispered.

I put my arm around her.

“They betrayed that trust.”

The detective continued.

“We’re charging them with elder abuse, financial exploitation, and forgery. The evidence is strong.”

I nodded.

The first truth was out.

My parents had not just been disappointed in me.

They had been stealing from the one person who had always loved them unconditionally.

Grandma looked at me.

“You knew something was wrong, didn’t you?”

I nodded.

“I suspected. But I didn’t have proof until you sent the code.”

She smiled faintly.

“I knew you would come.”

The first truth was painful.

But it was necessary.

And it was only the beginning.
