Chapter 14: The Final Reckoning

The final reckoning came during the sentencing hearing.

My mother sat in the defendant’s box in a plain prison uniform, no pearls, no tailored suit. The mask she had worn for decades was gone. Her hands trembled slightly as the judge read the sentence.

“Fifteen years in prison for elder abuse, financial exploitation, and forgery.”

The courtroom was silent.

My mother looked at me across the room.

For the first time, there was no calculation in her eyes. Only regret.

“I thought I was protecting the family,” she said quietly.

I stood up, holding Leo in my arms.

“You destroyed it the moment you tried to steal from Grandma and lie to me,” I replied. “I will never forgive you. But I will never let you define me again.”

My mother was led away in handcuffs.

No dramatic goodbye.

No tears from her.

Just the final click of the door closing behind the monster who had raised me.

The final reckoning was not satisfying.

It was necessary.

And it was done.
