Chapter 8: The Confrontation

The confrontation happened the next day at the police station.
I sat across from my mother in the visitation room.
Helen looked smaller, older, broken.
“Why?” I asked.
She looked at the table.
“We needed the money. Your father’s business was failing. We didn’t want to ask you because you were always so judgmental.”
I laughed bitterly.
“I was judgmental? I was the one who paid for your hospital bills, your car repairs, your vacations. I was the one who bailed you out every time you asked. And you still stole from Grandma.”
Helen’s eyes filled with tears.
“We thought she wouldn’t notice.”
I stood up.
“She noticed. And now everyone knows what you did.”
I walked out without looking back.
