Chapter 12: The Last Attempt
Six months after the sentencing, Linda tried to reach me one last time.
She wrote me a long letter from prison. In it, she begged for forgiveness. She said she had been wrong about me. She admitted that she had always been jealous of me and that she had influenced Ryan to turn against me. She even admitted that she had known he was going to push me that night.
The letter ended with one desperate request:
“Please visit me. Just once. I want to see you before I die in here.”
I read the letter three times.
Then I wrote a short reply.
Linda,
I will never visit you. I will never forgive you. And I will never forget what you did to me and my child.
You don’t deserve peace. Neither does Ryan.
I mailed it and never heard from her again.
Ryan, on the other hand, stopped writing after I ignored his last few letters. I think he finally understood that I was never going to respond.
Still, sometimes I would lie awake at night and wonder what they were doing in prison. Were they suffering? Were they regretting what they had done?
I hoped they were.
