Chapter 15: What I Kept

It’s been five years since I walked back into that courtroom.

Ryan is still in prison. He’ll be eligible for parole in a few more years, but even if he gets out, he’ll have nothing left. Linda was released last year, but she’s living in a small room in a relative’s house, broke and alone. Neither of them has tried to contact me again.

I live a quiet life now.

I work full-time at the women’s shelter, helping survivors rebuild their lives. I have a small but warm apartment. I have Daniel, who treats me with more kindness than I ever thought possible. And slowly, I’m learning to trust again — not just him, but myself.

Some nights, I still think about the baby I lost.

The pain never completely goes away. But it has become softer, more manageable. I’ve started to believe that one day, I might try to have a child again — not to replace the one I lost, but to honor them.

I no longer define myself by what Ryan and Linda did to me.

I define myself by what I did afterward.

I survived.

I fought back.

I took back my life.

And in the end, I became someone stronger than I ever thought I could be.

They tried to kill me.

But instead, they created the woman who destroyed them.

And I will never forget that I was the one who won.
