Chapter 7: Picking Up the Pieces

While Ryan and Linda were dealing with the legal system, I started rebuilding my life.
I had taken back the house and most of the savings they had stolen after my “death.” I sold the house quickly — I didn’t want to live in the place where I had almost died. Instead, I bought a smaller, quieter apartment in a different part of the city.
I also started seeing a therapist.
For three years, I had focused entirely on revenge. I hadn’t allowed myself to grieve the baby I lost or process what had been done to me. Now that Ryan and Linda were facing justice, the pain I had buried started to surface.
Some days were harder than others.
I would wake up crying from nightmares of falling down the stairs. Other times, I would sit alone and think about the child I never got to meet. The anger was still there, but it was slowly being replaced by something else — grief.
My therapist helped me understand that what happened to me wasn’t just about revenge. It was about survival. And now that I was safe, I needed to learn how to live again.
One afternoon, while I was walking through a park near my new apartment, I saw a pregnant woman sitting on a bench. She was gently rubbing her belly and smiling.
For the first time in years, I didn’t feel only pain when I saw someone pregnant.
I felt something close to hope.
Maybe one day, I could have that too.
Not with Ryan, of course. But with someone new. Someone who would never hurt me or the child I carried.

I wasn’t ready yet.
But for the first time, I believed that maybe, someday, I could be.
