Chapter 3: Becoming a Ghost

Three months after I lost the baby, I disappeared.
I had been saving money in a secret account for weeks. I had also transferred some of our joint savings into that account without Ryan noticing. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to start over.
The night I left, I made it look like an accident — or a suicide.
I drove my car to a bridge near a river. I left my phone, some blood (from a cut on my arm), and pieces of my clothing near the water. I even left a note in the car that sounded like a suicide letter.
Then I walked away.
My friend picked me up a few miles down the road and drove me to another state.
For the next few weeks, the police searched for me. Ryan played the devastated husband on the news. He cried during interviews and said he couldn’t live without me. Linda stood beside him, looking appropriately sad.
I watched it all from a small apartment in another city.
I had changed my hair, my name, and my appearance. I was no longer the woman they knew.
I was someone else now.
Someone stronger.
Someone who was going to make them pay.
While Ryan and Linda were busy playing the grieving family, I was building a new life. I got a job under my new name. I saved every penny I could. And I kept collecting more evidence from a distance.
I contacted Ryan’s ex-girlfriend. I found old messages between her and Linda where they talked badly about me. I even managed to get copies of the hospital records from the night I was pushed.

I was building a case.
And I was going to make sure it was airtight.
