Chapter 13: Learning to Breathe Again

Two years after the trial, I finally felt like I was starting to heal.

I had moved into a new apartment with better lighting and a small balcony. I had also started working part-time at a women’s shelter, helping other survivors of domestic violence and abuse. It wasn’t a high-paying job, but it gave me purpose.

Helping other women made me feel like my pain wasn’t completely wasted. Every time I sat with someone who had been through something similar, I felt a little less alone.

One afternoon, while I was at the shelter, a young woman came in with bruises on her arms and fear in her eyes. She reminded me of myself years ago — scared, unsure, and unsure if anyone would believe her.

I spent hours talking to her.

When she finally broke down and cried, I didn’t try to give her advice. I just sat with her.

Later that day, my supervisor pulled me aside.

“You’re really good with the women here,” she said. “Have you ever thought about doing this full-time?”

I thought about it.

For the first time in years, I felt excited about something.

“I’ll think about it,” I told her.

That night, I went home and looked at myself in the mirror.

I looked different from the woman who had faked her death three years ago. My eyes were clearer. My posture was straighter. There was a quiet strength in my face that hadn’t been there before.

I wasn’t the same person anymore.

And I was finally starting to be okay with that.
