Chapter 14: A New Beginning

Three years after the trial, I met someone.

His name was Daniel. He was a quiet, kind man who worked as a teacher. We met at a bookstore when we both reached for the same book. It was such a cliché that I almost laughed.

At first, I was hesitant. I didn’t trust easily anymore. I kept waiting for red flags, for signs that he would eventually hurt me like Ryan had.

But Daniel was different.

He was patient. He didn’t push. When I told him I had been through something difficult in the past and wasn’t ready to talk about it yet, he simply nodded and said, “Whenever you’re ready.”

Six months into dating, I finally told him everything.

I told him about Ryan and Linda. I told him about the miscarriage. I told him about faking my death and coming back for revenge. I expected him to be shocked or even disgusted.

Instead, he took my hand and said quietly:

“You did what you had to do to survive. I’m glad you’re still here.”

That was the moment I knew he was different.

For the first time since Ryan, I allowed myself to imagine a future with someone. Not marriage right away — I wasn’t ready for that yet. But maybe, someday.

Daniel didn’t try to fix me.

He just accepted me, broken pieces and all.

And that was enough.
