Chapter 1: The Recording

I had the key to Adrian’s townhouse because he said we were already a family. That key was about to destroy him.
I arrived that Thursday afternoon because our wedding planner needed his passport number for the honeymoon bookings. Adrian hadn’t answered my calls, so I let myself in, expecting to find him in his home office with his laptop open and coffee cooling beside him.
Instead, I heard voices from the living room.
A young woman was crying.
“You promised you would help me,” she said, her voice shaking. “You said we would figure it out together.”
Adrian’s voice was cold and controlled, the same tone he used when negotiating business deals.
“Rosa, be reasonable. This will destroy everything I’ve worked for. My promotion, the merger — everything. Just take the money and handle it quietly. No one has to know.”
I stepped into the doorway and froze.
Rosa, his twenty-two-year-old housekeeper, was on her knees on the marble floor. Both hands were pressed against her stomach as if she could physically shield the life inside her. Tears streamed down her face. Adrian stood over her in a tailored navy suit, looking down at her like she was an inconvenience rather than a human being.
“Get rid of that baby,” he said again, quieter this time. “It will hurt my career.”
Rosa shook her head desperately. “It’s your baby too. You can’t just—”
“I can,” Adrian cut her off. “And I will. Take the money. Leave the city. If you breathe a word of this to anyone, I’ll say you stole from me. No one will believe a housekeeper over me.”
My hands moved before my mind caught up.
I pulled out my phone, opened the camera, and started recording.
Adrian kept talking.
“You’re young. You have your whole life ahead of you. Don’t throw it away because of one mistake. I’ll make sure you’re taken care of financially. But the baby cannot exist. Not now. Not ever.”
Rosa was sobbing so hard she could barely speak.
I had heard enough.
I stepped fully into the room.
“No,” I said, my voice steady despite the storm raging inside me. “The only future ending today is yours.”
Adrian spun around. For one split second, pure panic flashed across his face. Then he forced out a laugh, the same charming laugh he used at dinner parties.
“Evelyn. This isn’t what it seems.”
I kept the phone raised.
“It seems like you got your housekeeper pregnant and now you’re trying to force her to have an abortion so it doesn’t damage your precious career.”
His eyes dropped to my phone.
“Stop recording.”
I stepped toward Rosa and held out my hand.
“Come with me,” I said gently. “You don’t have to stay here.”
Rosa looked between us, terrified. Adrian moved to block the doorway.
“She isn’t going anywhere,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “Give me the phone, Evelyn.”
I didn’t move.
“Step aside,” I said. “Or this recording becomes evidence of unlawful confinement.”
Adrian stared at me like he was seeing me for the first time. The sweet, agreeable fiancée he thought he knew was gone. In her place stood someone he had never bothered to truly understand.
He stepped aside.
As Rosa and I walked past him, he called after me, voice shaking with rage.
“You’re going to regret this.”

I didn’t turn around.
“No,” I said quietly. “You are.”
