Chapter 5: The Reckoning

Two weeks after I canceled the wedding, Adrian was suspended from his company.
The internal investigation had found enough evidence of misconduct to warrant further action. His boss had personally told him that the merger was at serious risk because of the ethics violation.
Adrian’s perfect life was unraveling in real time.
That same week, Rosa and I met with Priya to discuss next steps. We were building both a civil lawsuit against Adrian for workplace harassment and coercion, and supporting the potential criminal charges the district attorney was considering.
Rosa was still scared, but she was also stronger than she had been that first day. She had found a new job through one of the organizations I worked with, and she was receiving prenatal care.
One afternoon, while we were reviewing documents, Rosa looked at me and asked a quiet question.
“Why are you helping me?” she asked. “You didn’t have to. You could have just walked away.”
I thought about it for a moment.
“Because I know what it feels like to be powerless,” I said. “And because no one should have to face someone like Adrian alone.”
Rosa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Thank you,” she whispered.
That night, I received one final message from Adrian. This one came from his work email, since I had blocked every personal number he tried.
Adrian: You’ve ruined me. I hope you’re happy.
I stared at the message for a long time.
Then I typed a single reply.
Evelyn: You ruined yourself the moment you told Rosa to get rid of your baby to protect your career. I just made sure everyone else saw who you really are.
I hit send.
Then I closed my laptop.
Adrian Cole had spent years believing he was untouchable.

He was about to learn that no one is untouchable when they underestimate the wrong woman.
And I was just getting started.
