Chapter 8: The Family That Turned

Adrian’s parents finally stopped calling me after the lawsuit was filed.

Instead, they turned their attention to trying to save their son’s reputation. They hired a high-profile crisis management firm and tried to spin the story as a “personal matter that had been exaggerated.”

It didn’t work.

One afternoon, Adrian’s mother showed up at my nonprofit’s office. She looked exhausted and furious. Security tried to stop her, but I told them to let her in.

We sat in my small office with the door closed.

“You’re destroying my son,” she said without preamble. “He made a mistake. People make mistakes. But you’re trying to ruin his entire life over one error in judgment.”

I looked at her calmly.

“Your son got a young woman pregnant and then tried to force her to terminate the pregnancy so it wouldn’t affect his career. He threatened her. He used his position of power over her. That’s not a mistake. That’s a pattern of behavior.”

Adrian’s mother’s face twisted.

“You were supposed to marry him. You were supposed to stand by him. Instead, you’re helping some girl destroy everything he’s built.”

I leaned forward slightly.

“That ‘girl’ is a human being. And your son tried to erase her child because it was inconvenient for him. I will not stand by and let that happen.”

She stared at me for a long moment.

Then she stood up.

“You’ll regret this,” she said coldly. “Adrian comes from a powerful family. We protect our own.”

I didn’t flinch.

“So do I.”

After she left, I sat in silence for a long time.

I had always known Adrian came from money and influence. But I also knew that power only protected you until the truth became too loud to ignore.

And right now, the truth was screaming.
