Chapter 9: Rosa’s New Life

While Adrian’s world was collapsing, Rosa’s was slowly beginning to stabilize.

With the help of my nonprofit and several other organizations, she found stable housing and a new job as an administrative assistant at a small company that was supportive of her situation. She was receiving proper prenatal care and had started building a small support network.

One afternoon, she came to my office to update me on how she was doing.

“I got a new ultrasound last week,” she said, smiling shyly as she showed me the picture. “The baby is healthy.”

I looked at the grainy image and felt something warm in my chest.

“I’m really happy for you, Rosa.”

She hesitated, then asked, “Do you think… do you think I’ll be okay? Raising this baby alone?”

I looked at her seriously.

“You won’t be alone,” I said. “You have people who will help you. And you’re stronger than you think.”

Rosa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I still can’t believe you helped me. After what Adrian did to you… most people would have just walked away.”

I shook my head.

“I couldn’t walk away. Not when I knew what was happening.”

Rosa was quiet for a moment.

Then she said, “I’m sorry about your wedding.”

I smiled faintly.

“I’m not. I would rather know the truth now than marry a man who could do something like that.”

Rosa nodded.

We sat together for a while longer, talking about baby names and future plans. For the first time since this all began, I felt a sense of peace.

I had lost a fiancé.

But I had helped protect a mother and her child.

And that felt like a victory worth having.
