Chapter 11: The Weight of Consequences
The legal process moved faster than I expected.
Adrian’s lawyers tried to drag things out, but the evidence was too strong. The recording, combined with Rosa’s testimony and the growing number of former employees willing to speak out against him, made his position almost impossible to defend.
Three months after the lawsuit was filed, Adrian’s legal team reached out with a settlement offer. They proposed a large financial payout in exchange for dropping the civil case and asking the district attorney to consider a plea deal on the criminal charges.
Priya and I met with Rosa to discuss it.
Rosa was visibly pregnant now. She had found a small apartment and was working part-time while preparing for the baby. When we presented the settlement offer, she was quiet for a long time.
“I don’t want his money,” she finally said. “I just want him to admit what he did. I want him to stop pretending he’s the victim.”
Priya nodded.
“We can push for a public apology and admission of wrongdoing as part of the settlement,” she said. “But we should also consider what’s best for you and the baby long-term.”
Rosa looked at me.
“What do you think I should do?”
I thought carefully before answering.
“I think you should do whatever gives you the most peace,” I said. “If taking the money and moving forward helps you and your child have a better life, then do it. But if you want him to publicly admit what he did, we can fight for that too.”
Rosa was quiet again.
Then she said, “I want him to admit it. I want people to know what kind of man he really is. But I also don’t want this to drag on forever. I want to focus on my baby.”

We negotiated a settlement that included a substantial financial payment, a public statement admitting wrongdoing, and an agreement that Adrian would have no contact with Rosa or the child. The district attorney’s office also used the strength of the civil case to push for a guilty plea on the criminal charges.
Adrian had no choice but to accept.
