Chapter 15: What Remains

A year after I walked into Adrian’s townhouse and recorded that conversation, my life looked completely different.
I was no longer engaged. I was no longer part of Adrian’s world. But I was finally, truly free.
My nonprofit had grown significantly. We were helping more people than ever before. David and I were still seeing each other, taking things slowly but steadily. Rosa and her daughter were thriving. And I had finally made peace with everything that had happened.
Sometimes, late at night, I still thought about that moment in Adrian’s living room — the look on his face when he realized I had recorded everything. I thought about Rosa on her knees, begging for her child’s life. I thought about how close I had come to marrying a man I never truly knew.
But those thoughts no longer consumed me.
Because I had chosen differently.
I had chosen to stand up.
I had chosen to protect someone who needed help.
I had chosen myself.
And in doing so, I had taken back everything Adrian thought he could control.
He had tried to erase a life because it threatened his career.
Instead, he lost everything he thought mattered.
And I walked away with something far more valuable.
My integrity.
My peace.

And the knowledge that I would never again stay silent when someone needed me to speak.
