Adrian had always seen me as convenient.

I was educated, well-mannered, and came from a respectable family. I ran a small nonprofit that helped domestic workers and low-income women. He thought it was charming — a cute hobby that made him look progressive at corporate events.

He never asked too many questions about my work. He never realized that before I started the nonprofit, I had spent eight years practicing employment law. He didn’t know that my organization had successfully sued several powerful men for workplace harassment and exploitation. He didn’t know that I still had connections in the legal world — including the lawyer who was currently overseeing the ethics certification for Adrian’s company’s upcoming merger.

Adrian thought he was marrying a sweet, soft woman who would support his ambitions without question.

In the elevator down from his townhouse, Rosa was shaking so hard I had to keep an arm around her shoulders. She was young, scared, and completely alone.

“I didn’t know what to do,” she whispered. “He said if I told anyone, he would ruin me. He said no one would believe me.”

I tightened my arm around her.

“I believe you,” I said. “And I have proof now.”

When we reached the lobby, I called my lawyer, Priya Sharma. She had been my mentor during my law career and was one of the sharpest employment attorneys in the city.

“I need you to meet me at my apartment,” I said as soon as she answered. “Bring everything you have on workplace exploitation and coercion cases. And clear your schedule for the next few days.”

Priya didn’t ask unnecessary questions.

“I’ll be there in forty minutes.”

I took Rosa back to my apartment. While she showered and changed into some of my clothes, I made tea and tried to calm my racing thoughts.

Adrian had been cheating on me.

He had gotten another woman pregnant.

He had tried to force her to terminate the pregnancy to protect his career.

And he had threatened her if she spoke out.

The man I was supposed to marry in six weeks was a monster.

I looked down at the engagement ring still on my finger. It suddenly felt heavy and wrong.
