Chapter 1: Marble

After my mother-in-law shoved me down the stairs, I woke up in a hospital bed, signed the divorce papers, and vanished without leaving a trace. That same night, my husband was celebrating with his mistress when his phone rang. The doctor’s voice was ice-cold: “Your wife was pregnant. She lost the baby… and your test results confirm you’ll never father another child.” Moments later, my final text reached his screen: “Enjoy the family you chose.”

PART 1

The last sound I heard before my head slammed against the marble staircase was my mother-in-law’s voice.

“Maybe now you’ll finally know your place.”

Then everything disappeared.

When I regained consciousness, the ceiling above me was bright white, and every breath sent pain through my body. Standing beside my bed was Dr. Alexander Reed, his expression far more solemn than I wanted to see.

“I’m sorry, Audrey,” he said quietly. “You were eight weeks pregnant.”

My hand instinctively covered my stomach.

“No…”

He lowered his gaze.

“The fall caused the miscarriage.”

My husband, Dominic, never came to the hospital.

Instead, his mother, Victoria, sent a bouquet with a handwritten note.

Accidents happen. Stop making everything into a drama.

That was the exact moment my heartbreak turned into determination.

For three years, Dominic and Victoria had treated me as though I should be grateful they had accepted me into their family. They criticized my inexpensive clothes, controlled every household expense, and constantly reminded me that the mansion, the cars, and Dominic’s construction company all belonged to them.

What they never knew was that my late father had quietly left me an $80 million trust managed by independent attorneys. Dominic had never seen my name connected to it because I had intentionally kept my wealth hidden, hoping he loved me—not my money.

I was wrong.

They also had no idea that two years earlier, when Dominic’s business was on the verge of bankruptcy, I had secretly rescued it through a private investment company.

That holding company owned sixty-two percent of the business.

It also owned the mansion they proudly called theirs.

Even Dominic’s luxury vehicle was leased through my corporation.

I had hidden the truth because I wanted a marriage built on trust instead of wealth.

Instead, my silence convinced them I was powerless.
