Chapter 2: Signature

Before sunset, my attorney, Sophia Sterling, arrived with a stack of legal documents.

Without hesitation, I signed the divorce petition, the protective order, and authorization to freeze every company asset connected to my investment firm.

Sophia looked at me carefully.

“Are you certain?”

I glanced at the empty chair beside my hospital bed—the place where my husband should have been.

“I've never been more certain.”

The papers were precise. Divorce on grounds that included the documented injuries and the pattern of control. A protective order naming both Dominic and Victoria. Immediate freeze instructions on every account, property interest, and corporate holding tied to the investment entity that had kept their lifestyle afloat. Sophia had prepared the package the moment I called from the hospital and gave her the single sentence she needed: execute the contingency.

She did not ask for a longer explanation. She had helped structure the trust after my father’s death. She already understood what Dominic and Victoria had never bothered to learn.

A nurse escorted me through a private hospital exit later that evening.

I carried only my mother's necklace and the hospital bracelet still wrapped around my wrist.

No one from the family was notified of the discharge time. No forwarding address was left at the desk. The bouquet Victoria had sent remained on the windowsill, its note still attached, already irrelevant.

I stepped into the car Sophia had arranged and did not look back at the building.

Behind me, the marriage ended in ink and authorization codes.

Ahead of me was the quiet work of disappearance—complete, deliberate, and already funded.
