Chapter 12: Closed Account

In the second year the file became inactive in every channel that mattered.

I worked, traveled within ordinary limits, and maintained the small circle of people who had never required me to shrink. Sophia handled the last administrative closures and then transitioned to yearly check-ins. There was nothing left to freeze, nothing left to contest, and no address at which Dominic or Victoria could arrive with demands or revisions.

They had believed the marriage was a hierarchy with me at the bottom and their name at the top.

They had believed a shove down the stairs would reinforce that order.

They had believed my silence indicated the absence of resources and options.

All three beliefs had been incorrect.

I had signed the papers, locked the assets, sent the final text, and stepped out of the private hospital exit with nothing that belonged to them and everything they had never known was already mine.

The family they chose was the one they were left with.

I was no longer available to complete it.

That was the entire remaining consequence, and it required no further message from me to stay in effect.
