Chapter 9: Clean Perimeter

By the third month the structure had stabilized into its new shape.

The divorce decree was finalized with terms that reflected the documented facts rather than Dominic’s preferred story. The protective order was extended. Corporate control was formalized; the construction company would continue or be restructured under decisions I was under no obligation to explain to him. The mansion was prepared for disposition or retention according to the investment entity’s ordinary processes. None of those processes included Victoria’s input.

I marked the pregnancy loss in the only way that remained available to me: privately, without performance, and without granting Dominic or his mother any role in the aftermath. The infertility result was his medical fact to carry. It no longer intersected with my future.

Sophia closed the active emergency file and transitioned the remaining matters to standard oversight. I kept the single device that could reach her and discarded every channel that had once connected me to the house on the hill.

They had pushed me down the stairs and called it a lesson in knowing my place.

My place, it turned out, was majority owner, protected party, and the one person who no longer required their permission to leave.

The marble had been their choice.

The silence that followed was mine.
