Chapter 3: The Call

Meanwhile, Dominic believed I had simply disappeared.

Victoria had already told him I had “run away,” and he spent the evening at our house drinking champagne with his mistress, Paige, convinced the hardest part of his life was over.

Then his phone rang.

Dr. Reed’s calm voice shattered the celebration.

“Your wife was pregnant,” he said. “She lost the baby after the fall.”

There was a long silence.

Then the doctor added one final sentence.

“And the fertility tests you requested last month confirm that you are permanently infertile.”

Dominic’s grip loosened.

His phone slipped from his hand.

At that exact moment, another notification appeared on the screen.

It was my final message.

Enjoy the family you chose.

I sent it from a clean device after the private exit, once Sophia confirmed the freezes had taken effect and the protective order was in motion. I did not wait for a reply. There was nothing left to discuss with a man who had left me on a hospital bed while his mother called the loss of our child an accident and a drama.

The mansion he was standing in was no longer his to celebrate inside.

The company whose profits funded the champagne was no longer under his control.

The future children he had imagined with someone else had already been ruled out by the same medical file that recorded what Victoria’s shove had destroyed.

I turned the phone off after the message delivered.

Somewhere in the city, Dominic was beginning to understand that the wife he and his mother had treated as disposable had never been powerless.

She had only been waiting for the moment when silence stopped being useful.

That moment had arrived on the marble stairs.

Everything after it belonged to the documents already signed and the assets already locked.

I left no trace for them to follow.

Only consequences.
