Chapter 4: First Notices
Dominic spent the rest of the night calling numbers that no longer connected to me.
By morning the first formal notices began to arrive. The protective order was served. The divorce petition was filed. More disruptive still were the freeze alerts from the banks and the corporate service providers tied to the construction company. Access codes failed. Signature authority on the operating accounts was suspended pending review by the majority stakeholder.

Victoria dismissed the early alerts as a tantrum. She told Dominic I had always been dramatic and that any “paperwork games” would collapse once their attorneys made a few calls. Paige, still present in the house I had paid for, offered sympathetic silence and another glass of champagne.
I received Sophia’s confirmation that every authorized freeze had executed cleanly. I did not respond to the attempted calls or the messages routed through old mutual contacts. The hospital bracelet had already been cut off and discarded. The only number that could reach me belonged to my attorney.
