Chapter 10: The Aftermath

Elena sat in the nursery with Leo sleeping in her arms.
The room had been cleaned. The poisoned milk was gone. The crib was new. But the memory remained.
Marcus came to visit that afternoon. He looked older, broken.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I should have seen what my mother was doing.”
Elena didn’t look at him. “You should have. But you didn’t.”
He nodded. “I want to be in Leo’s life. If you’ll let me.”
Elena was silent for a long time.
“You can visit,” she said. “But I will never trust you again.”
Marcus accepted that.
The aftermath was quiet.
Elena sold the big house. She moved into a smaller, safer place with Leo. She started therapy. She began to heal.
