Chapter 6: The Investigation
The police arrived within minutes.
Blue and red lights flashed across the nursery windows. Officers in uniform and detectives in plain clothes filled the elegant room, turning it into a crime scene. The foaming milk was photographed, sampled, and sealed in evidence bags. The broken bottle was collected. The maid Anna gave her statement with a trembling voice, describing exactly what she had seen Victoria do.
Elena stood by the crib, holding Leo tightly, refusing to let anyone take him even for a medical check. The baby was now fussing, but alive. The poison had not reached him.
The lead detective, a middle-aged woman named Reyes, approached Elena gently.
“We need to take your mother in for questioning,” she said. “The evidence is strong. The milk contained a high dose of rat poison. If the maid hadn’t intervened, your son would be dead.”
Elena’s voice was hollow. “She did this. My own mother.”
Reyes nodded. “We’ll test everything. The vial, the bottle, the room. We’ll also check security footage.”
Marcus stood beside Elena, pale and silent. He had not spoken since the police arrived. His eyes kept darting to Victoria, who sat on a chair in the corner, handcuffed, staring at the floor.
Victoria finally looked up. “This is a family matter. Not a police matter.”
Reyes’s voice was cold. “Attempted murder of a child is very much a police matter.”
Victoria’s eyes met Elena’s. For a moment, there was no remorse — only cold calculation.
“I did it for the family,” she whispered. “For our legacy.”
Elena turned away, unable to look at her mother any longer.
The investigation moved quickly. Officers searched the house. They found the vial of poison in Victoria’s private study, labeled as “fertilizer” but clearly not. Security footage from the nursery hallway showed Victoria pouring the contents into the bottle when she thought no one was watching.
The evidence was overwhelming.
As Victoria was led out in handcuffs, she looked back at Elena one last time.
“You’ll understand one day,” she said.
Elena held Leo tighter and said nothing.
