Chapter 3: The Family Secret

The truth spilled out like the poisoned milk on the floor.
Victoria sat on the edge of the nursery chair, her elegant suit suddenly looking too heavy on her frail frame. Elena stood across from her, Leo clutched tightly in her arms, refusing to let her mother come closer.
“It started with your father,” Victoria said, voice low. “He had an affair. The woman gave birth to a boy. I covered it up. I paid her to disappear. But the bloodline was tainted. When Leo was born, I ran the test. He carries that same blood. He is not pure Sterling. He would have destroyed everything we built.”
Elena’s voice was shaking with rage. “So you decided to kill him?”
Victoria’s eyes were wet. “I thought it was mercy. A quiet end. No one would know. The family would continue strong.”
Elena laughed bitterly. “Mercy? You poisoned your own grandson’s milk because of an affair from decades ago?”
Victoria looked away. “This family has survived worse. We have rules. Bloodlines matter.”
The maid Anna stood in the corner, still trembling. “Ma’am… the police are outside.”
Victoria’s face crumpled. For the first time, the powerful woman looked small.
Elena turned to the door as footsteps approached.
“You raised me to be strong,” she said. “But you forgot to teach me how to be human.”
The door opened.
Police entered the nursery.
Victoria did not resist as they placed handcuffs on her wrists.
As she was led away, she looked back at Elena one last time.
“I did it for the family,” she whispered.
Elena held Leo tighter.
“You did it for yourself.”
