Chapter 4: The Husband’s Arrival

Elena’s husband, Marcus, arrived home an hour later.
He walked into the nursery to find police officers, a crying maid, and his wife holding their son with a face that looked like it had aged ten years in one night.
“What the hell is going on?” Marcus demanded.
Elena turned to him, eyes red but voice steady.
“Your mother tried to poison our son.”
Marcus froze.
He looked at the foaming milk still on the floor, at the police taking samples, at Victoria being led out in handcuffs.
“Mom?” he whispered.
Victoria looked at her son with pleading eyes. “Marcus… it was for the family. The bloodline—”
Marcus stepped back as if she had slapped him.
“You tried to kill my son?”
The police officer read Victoria her rights.
Marcus didn’t stop them.
He walked to Elena and wrapped his arms around her and Leo, his body shaking.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I didn’t know. I didn’t see.”
Elena didn’t pull away, but she didn’t soften either.
“You never saw,” she said quietly. “You never wanted to see.”
Marcus held them tighter.

The husband had arrived.
But the marriage — and the family — had already broken.
