Chapter 12: The Custody Battle
Two weeks later, Charles officially filed for permanent guardianship of Lucy, Rachel, and April.
Margaret Hale represented him in court. She presented Rose’s notebook, the audio recordings, the video from the neighbor, and the evidence that had been revealed at the wedding.
Arthur tried to fight back. His lawyer argued that Charles was too old to raise three young girls and that the children should be placed with their father.
But the evidence was overwhelming.
The judge reviewed everything carefully. In the end, she ruled in Charles’s favor.
“Given the documented history of emotional abuse and neglect, and considering the clear wishes of the children, temporary guardianship is granted to Mr. Charles Bennett. Mr. Arthur Caldwell will have supervised visitation only, and only if the children agree to it.”
Arthur sat in silence as the ruling was read. He didn’t argue. He didn’t look at his daughters.
When the hearing ended, Lucy turned to Charles and whispered:
“We’re really staying with you?”
Charles nodded.

“You’re staying with me. For as long as you want.”
For the first time since Rose’s funeral, all three girls smiled at the same time.
