Chapter 6: Arthur’s New Life
Arthur didn’t waste any time.
Less than two weeks after Rose’s funeral, news spread that he was planning to marry his girlfriend, a 29-year-old woman named Vanessa. The wedding was set for early spring — only four months away.
He moved quickly. He put the family home up for sale. He changed the locks. He even tried to access Rose’s life insurance and savings accounts, only to discover that Charles had already frozen them through the lawyer.
Lucy, Rachel, and April watched everything quietly from their grandfather’s house.
One evening, while the girls were doing homework, Lucy looked up from her notebook and said:
“He’s trying to erase Mom. Like she never existed.”
Charles sat down beside them.
“He can try,” he said. “But we’re not going to let him.”
He had already hired a private investigator. Within days, they discovered that Arthur had been seeing Vanessa for almost two years — long before Rose got sick. There were hotel receipts, messages, and even photos of the two of them together while Rose was still alive.
Charles kept the evidence in a locked drawer.
