Chapter 14: The Quiet

Months passed.
Arthur’s life continued to fall apart. He lost most of his assets in the divorce settlement. His reputation never recovered. He moved to another city and rarely contacted the girls. When he did try to reach out, the visits were short, awkward, and supervised.
The girls never asked to see him more often.
One quiet Sunday afternoon, Charles sat on the back porch with a cup of coffee. The girls were playing in the yard — Lucy helping Rachel with a drawing, April chasing butterflies with her rabbit tucked under one arm.
He watched them and felt a deep sense of peace.
He had lost his daughter.
But in return, he had gained three granddaughters who had taught him more about strength and courage than he had ever known.
They had carried their mother’s secrets for months. They had stayed quiet and waited for the right moment. And when that moment came, they had helped bring down the man who tried to throw them away.
