Chapter 3: The Notebook

The next morning, I sat at the kitchen table with Rose’s notebook.

The handwriting was familiar — neat, careful, and heartbreaking.

Rose had written about everything.

She wrote about Arthur’s affair with a much younger woman. She wrote about how he had started controlling her money and isolating her from friends. She wrote about the times he had grabbed her arm too hard during arguments. She even wrote about how he had begun treating the girls differently after he met his new girlfriend.

On one page, she had written:

If something happens to me, don’t let him take the girls. He doesn’t love them. He only loves the idea of a perfect new life.

I closed the notebook and looked at my granddaughters, who were watching me quietly from the doorway.

“How long have you had this?” I asked.

“Since the week before Mommy died,” Lucy answered. “She gave it to me and told me to hide it. She said Daddy would try to destroy it.”

Rachel stepped forward and placed the small recorder on the table.

“There are more recordings,” she said. “Mommy made them when she thought no one was listening.”

I didn’t open the recorder yet.

Instead, I looked at the three of them.

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

Lucy answered without hesitation.

“Because Mommy said we had to wait until Daddy showed everyone who he really was. She said if we showed everything too early, he would find a way to twist it.”

She looked at her sisters, then back at me.

“Now he’s trying to throw us away. So it’s time.”

I felt a deep ache in my chest.

My daughter had known she might not survive her marriage. And she had prepared her children — children — to fight back.

I closed the notebook.

“Then we fight,” I said.
